The qualifications needed to become a teacher vary by country, world region, and school systems, but the requirements are generally quite stringent. The most basic qualification is usually a degree or similar teaching qualification from an accredited higher education institution. In addition, many countries require that teachers hold certain licences or certificates related to their educational specialty as well as certifications in special education or teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL).
In many countries, becoming a teacher requires that candidates pass a competitive examination and complete an extensive training process. These exams typically involve testing of knowledge on core topics such as math, science, reading, writing and physical education. Depending on the area of expertise desired by the candidate and the school he or she intends to teach in, additional tests may also be required. Also often required for certification is evidence of having attended conferences, seminars and professional development courses in order to stay up-to-date with methodologies in pedagogy.
In addition to formal qualifications and tests, most schools look for teachers who demonstrate strong communication skills and possess a dedication to their craft. For example, primary school teachers might need to demonstrate how well they can motivate young children while secondary school teachers must show an understanding of teenage behaviour patterns. A clear criminal record is also often necessary before being hired by any school system - background checks are common practice when hiring new educators.
Just meeting the requirements above isn't enough to guarantee you'll be successful though - teaching involves interacting with people on a daily basis so enthusiasm for both your subject matter and engaging with learners is essential for success. To excel at teaching you'll need strong interpersonal skills too – creating a positive learning environment involves motivating students over extended periods of time which can sometimes prove difficult without being technically expert in both your subject matter and relating it successfully to your learners' needs.
